WOODLAWN RECOGNIZED FOR UNCOMMON ACHIEVEMENT
In other action on Monday, the school board recognized Woodlawn Elementary for earning three certificates of merit from the Kansas Confidence in Public Education Task Force. The task force, which is made up of a number of statewide educational groups, will host its annual Challenge Awards in November. It recognized Woodlawn for its third-grade reading and math and fifth-grade reading achievements on the Kansas Assessments. SCHOOL BOARD RECOGNIZES ALL SCHOOLS FOR STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE HONORS
The Kansas Standard of Excellence recognizes student results on the 2009 Kansas reading, mathematics, science or writing assessments that exceed expected levels of performance. Specific grade levels as well as the entire school may meet the criteria for exceptional performance. The district's division director of assessment, research and school improvement, Terry McEwen, recognized these achievements on Monday during the Lawrence Board of Education meeting. "We are pleased to announce that this year, for the first time, all 22 of our schools received recognition for achieving the Standard of Excellence in at least one grade level in at least one tested subject," McEwen said.

Woodlawn Nominated for National Honors
Kansas Interim Commissioner of Education Diane DeBacker nominated Woodlawn Elementary to compete for honors as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2010. The nomination honors Woodlawn for student achievement at high levels, while serving a student population that includes a large percentage of children considered academically at-risk.
